A ceety wis offeecially foondit in 1794 as a Roushie naval fortress on the ruins o Khadjibey an wis renamed Odessa bi Januar 1795 (when its new name wis first mentioned in offeecial correspondence). Neither origin o the new name nor reasons for renamin ar kent, tho etymologies an anecdotes aboond. Accordin tae ane o the stories, when someane suggestit Odessos as a name for the new Roushie port, Catherine II said that aw names in the Sooth o the Empire wur already ‘masculine,’ an didna want yet anither ane, sae she decidit tae chynge it tae mair ‘feminine’ Odessa. This anecdote is hichtlie dubious, acause thare wur at least twa ceeties (Eupatoria an Theodosia) which names soond ‘feminine’ for a Roushie; besides, the Czarina wis no a native Roushie speaker, an finally, aw ceeties ar feminine in Greek (as well as in Latin). Anither legend derives the name ‘Odessa’ frae the wird-play: in French (which wis then the leid spoken at the Roushie court), ‘plenty o watter’ is assez d’eau; if said backwards, it soonds seemilar tae that o the Greek colony’s name (an watter-relatit pun maks perfect sense, acause Odessa, tho situatit next tae the huge body o watter, haes limitit fresh watter supply). Onyhou, a link wi the name o the ancient Greek colony persists, sae thare might be some truth in the oral tradeetion.
Opera House, [1]. Go to the opera house for $20 or less. You can get very good tickets for only 100 UAH (€10) *don’t buy the cheaper ones because of restricted visibility). Odesa opera was called “the best opera in the world” by Ferdinand Fellner, and it’s definitely a must see in Odessa.  edit

The white chosen for dinner was a Spanish Verdejo and was excellent. I wasn’t planning on drinking any wine, but there was no alternative options for alcohol offered down in the restaurant. I did try to seek an alternative, but staff were flying around so I gave up.
Odessa Christian School is a well rounded experience for the young people. With small class sizes comes personal attention & a healthy dose of compassion for their students. We love the Christian Bibl…ical and spiritual training which forms the foundation of learning. How refreshing for students & faculty to spontaneously pray for each other whether in praise or asking for a blessing & guidance from God. A wholesome, happy place of education. Lovely school grounds which provides experiences like raising a garden, caring for goats, prayers down by the lake along with the usual activities eg basketball courts, cheerleading etc. See More

Food from street vendors, especially at the open air markets, should be approached with the same caution as you would display anywhere. It can be fantastic, or not. There are many supermarkets in Odesa that have high quality foods that you can buy as an alternative. There are several McDonald’s restaurants in the city (str. Derybasivska 23, Pryvokzalna square 1a).

I have visited Odessa on many occasions, it is one of my favourite restaurants in Dublin. So for my 30th birthday it was an easy choice! We booked dinner for 7.30pm for 18 people and an area upstairs …for drinks from 9pm.

Firstly, we did get there on the early side, but the place is not really well marked and we all wandered into the bar next door before finding the actual place which was a little awkward. Then the staff were somewhat brusque and unfriendly when we actually got in – which, given the hungover nature of most of the crew, did not go over particularly well.

The predecessor of Odesa, a small Tatar settlement, was founded by Hacı I Giray, the Khan of Crimea, in 1240 and originally named after him as “Hacıbey”. After a period of Lithuanian control, it passed into the domain of the Ottoman Sultan in 1529 and remained in Ottoman hands until the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1792. The city of Odesa was founded by a decree of the Empress Catherine the Great in 1794. From 1819–1858 Odesa was a free port. During the Soviet occupation it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. On January 1, 2000 the Quarantine Pier of Odesa trade sea port was declared a free port and free economic zone for a term of 25 years.

Tip: you may try to avoid tram number 5 in the summer, it gets VERY crowded, as it takes all the tourists to and from the beaches, and it goes also through the main city market. It might be a good idea to use this tram in the colder times of the year.
